Phoenix go top of the League with a 5-2 win

Today Loughborough Phoenix U12's were away to top of the league team Glenfield Utd.

Phoenix were determined to topple the current team off the top spot, from the minute the game started we took control with some forceful play, closing down and controlling the pace of the game.

Playing a high defensive line enabled us to play some fine quick passing football drawing play awaiting the right break through.

First up after 14 mins in was Finn with a great run through on the left cheekily placing a shot to the far right of the goalkeeper's finger tips. On the 20th minute the defence playing out from the back on the left switched play to the right finding Charlie on the halfway line making a darting run to the edge of the box taking on two defenders to place a curling shot into the top right hand corner. 26 mins in saw substitute AJ come on battling for possession on the left side of the field playing some lovely one two's with Massimo leading to a twenty-five yard curling dipping shot leaving the goalkeeper completely stranded to stop it.

28mins in saw AJ bagging his second goal with consecutive shots from Finn, Evan and Dan then goalkeeper punching the ball out to the edge of the penalty-D falling to AJ ready for a hammering shot to the bottom left corner.

The second half saw Glenfield change formation and tact, mounting a succession of counterattacks to finally score one back.

Not deturbed Phoenix mounted an attack from Matty up to Evan along the right side of the box placing a lovely cross in for Finn to finish off with a well placed goal dummying the goalkeeper placing it just out of his reach. 50mins in and Glenfield managed one more goal.

To be fair there were three more goals by ourselves but were called offside, at least two of which were dubious decisions, but in the spirit of the game the boys carried on and attempted several more shots on goal only to find the goalkeeper was also determined not to let anymore goals in. Defensively starting with Rocco who made some fine saves and gutsy challenges and some excellent drop kicks.

Defenders: Matty had a solid hard working game with some great balls forward. Cameron again with some great hard tackling and great balls forward even attempting a couple of long range shots.

In a sweeper role is our defensive hard man Tom covering the defenders and equally making some impressive runs forward and attempts on goal, unlucky to have a goal disallowed as it was a beauty.

In a new defensive role saw Massimo just in front of Tom playing a CDM role infilling for counter attacks and controlling play, this role is split between Mass and Tom, but again some nice passes forward with some good defensive covering, with a nice assist for AJ.

Midfield: These five controlled the game beautifully Osayd, Charlie, Evan, AJ and Finn they all tackled well closed down keeping the pressure up, but between them played some fine one twos with good passing and movement.

Striker: Dan our solitary striker fast, fast, fast, although not scoring today he had the defenders running all over with some great dummy runs and also some good attempts on goal.

Today we saw a great display of a team coming together, lots of pass and move, great one twos and some fine shooting .

The boys were so chuffed to go top of the league with a game in hand, as I am too. I cannot say how pleased I am in their performance and to see the comradery with each other.

So all that's left to say is they deserved the win played, they played well and I hope we do not have to have a break for Covid as we have worked so hard to get to this stage.
