Cup defeat hurts....But we're so proud of you.

Tony Sparano

Another bright morning with a brisk autumn breeze today as Phoenix took on Kirby Muxloe in the County Cup 4th round at their home ground.

Wow what a game, a real end to end performance, it all started in defence playing a high line today commanded by our centre back Cameron who had an amazing game, who today takes Man of the Match. He was helped with support from Tom, Matty and Jack who all equally worked hard with their defensive offside line and some epic clearances, coupled with fantastic support along the flanks.

Goalkeeper Rocco had a great game too, making several fantastic saves and showed some quick thinking in getting the ball forward.

Midfielders Osayd, Finn, Evan, Aj and Mass had their work cut out today, they pressed constantly and closed down quickly but equally had control in setting the pace of the game.

Fantastic crosses in from the wings unfortunate not to be met with goals, but good opposition defence.

Upfront Ollie and Dan worked hard with some excellent runs through, but just couldn't quite find success in their attempts on goal.

The oppositions Goalkeeper and centre back were outstanding in thwarting our attempts on goal.

Although we ended up in a draw, Phoenix did slightly have the edge on the game but were unlucky to run out of time to finish with a win.

No extra time this year just straight to penalties.

We scored 4, but unfortunately the opposition hit 5 from 5, resulting in our first loss this season.

Truthfully in my personal opinion Phoenix worked hard and were slightly the better team and we had them on the ropes in the latter stages of the game, but it was just not meant to be.

As much as I disagree with penalties, its like tossing a coin in the air and waiting to see how the coin lands, it is so heartbreaking for the child who doesn't score and the team that loses.

The children should take solace in their fantastic performance and hard work that they put in today, it was an entertaining and nail biting game, I was trully proud of them. I saw them all get together at the end showing that they learnt from this as they are a whole team and were equally responsible to have ended in a draw at full time which then led onto penalties not just the one player who misses to cause defeat, but a team that were beaten together.

Once again great performance and a great fighting spirit.
